October weekend chores

  1. Plant assorted narcissus and allium bulbs & astilbe tubers.
  2. Cut down spent foliage - I'm looking at you lobelia, hosta, and ornamental grasses!
  3. Harvest last-of-the-season tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, & potatoes.
  4. Pull up bindweed & other weeds.
  5. Finish spreading the pile of hemlock mulch that's been sitting in the driveway for a year.
  6. Cut down and fertilize asparagus bed (weed out the females?)

Do I even bother to put up Halloween decorations at this late date??

Hell No, We Ain't Gonna Mow - Veggie Gardens and Landscape Timbers

Last night G found literature at the local Home Depot that says that we should not be using pressure treated lumber anywhere near food (it's treated with a copper compound that can leach out), so there goes our primary idea for the vegetable garden terraces.  Plan B is installation of those heavy concrete blocks like our neighbor used - cheaper, yes, but also more work.

Here's the area that we're going to be working on  all staked out.  It's about a 30-45 degree slope that is a pain in the rear to mow.
